MONTHLY MESSAGE from TRACY, KATE & MEG

January/February/March 2011 Message - Follow Your Dreams

The place where God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.
~ Frederick Buechner on Vocation
There are so many inspiring stories about people who have followed their hearts to find a vocation that expresses a deep internal sense of passion. In a new age world we often hear these clichés: “Follow your dreams,” or “Do what you love and the money will follow.” On the surface this advice sounds inviting and exciting, but don’t underrate the courage and perseverance it takes to commit deeply to a path that is close to your heart.

Dreaming and imagining are first and important steps in the process of creating a rich and fulfilling vocational life. In times like ours, however, the dream that starts in your heart can become a nightmare fast if you aren’t prepared for the challenges of really committing to a vocation that matters to you. Too many people start down a path toward a dream and are surprised and disappointed when they run into the inevitable obstacles along the way. Whether we are coaching someone in their own healing, in the healing of a relationship or marriage, or in the creation of a business or vocation, when the obstacles show up people often say, “If this was meant to be, it shouldn’t be this hard.”

It is a myth that doing what you love means you will never face obstacles or adversity. Interview anyone who has created something of substance in their lives – a marriage, a family, a business or a vocation – and they will tell you about the struggles and challenges they confronted along the way. But they will also tell you that it was their passion for the path they chose that provided the strength, focus and resolve to push through the less glamorous parts of the journey. And they will undoubtedly tell you that they learned some deep lessons about themselves and about life along the way.

In a world that is sometimes short on meaning and purpose, we need more people who are willing to dream, to risk, to struggle and to persevere to express the deeper possibilities we hold inside us. Dreams are worth pursuing but require commitment and fortitude to bring them into being. We wish you the blessing of finding “your great gladness,” and the courage to take action to create the life you imagine.

Blessings from the Sisters,
Tracy, Kate and Meg
